Roger Jessop

Art of Africa

Roger would do more paintings – if he had time! He loves the detail on dhows and old town Mombasa, so these are usually his subjects.  “Smuggler’s Dhow at sea” is done from a black and white photo taken in the 60’s.  It is one of the old Indian Dhows that would trade up and down the East African Coast calling in at all the ports with carpets from Persia, chests and spices etc.  The dhows would come down from The Persia Gulf in Oct/Nov with the north monsoon, called the Kaskasi, going as far as Zanzibar and maybe beyond, then back again when the monsoon swing back in March/April and is then called the Kuzi.
