Roger Jessop

Art of Africa

Roger’s workshops provide a crucible where new technologies can be alloyed with old and traditional methods. His team have forged their skills at the anvils from which he forged his own. Roger’s father was a pioneering engineer in post World War II Kenya, having served as an Engineering Officer in the Royal Navy during the war. Roger’s techniques, and many of his tools, were handed down from his father and are now being taught to his apprentices. Their talents are tested, tempered and then challenged until these young men become craftsmen in their own right.

All of Roger’s creations are made from flat sheet mild steel, they are then electroplated (because of the rust problem of living on the coast in the tropics) and then painted, first with a two pot undercoat, then with cellulose car paint.  After that we start the airbrushing and hand painting etc.
